My uncle called me to look at the knotters on his NH 570 baler. While looking things over I noted that the eye of the needles has quite a groove worn in them from the twine, to the point where I could imagine the splice knot between balls could catch in the groove and cause problems. Can those needles be welded up? Any other ideas? New needle from CNH is $233. Thanks!

The new needles are hardened where the older balers had regular needles.

Got to wondering if I could steal a page out of the D1000 design book. Those machines have cast aluminum needles with a replaceable hard steel pin in base of the eye to protect the aluminum from wear. Wonder if the same technique would work on these cast iron small baler needles.
