Looking at a new round baler. Make all bermuda grass/johnson grass hay. Interested in either a crop cutter baler or bale slice to make mature hay more digestible. Any experiences in dry hay with these balers? Looking at either John Deere with the HC Cutter or a New Holland/Case with bale slice or crop cutter. Thanks for any advise.

NH advertises around 6" crop with bale slice and around 2" with crop cutter, seems awful small pieces to use crop cutter, unless you are doing balage. My next baler might have the bale slice option, but I do dry hay only.

My last baler had bale slice and I noticed much less waste from the cows in later over mature crop or long stemmy crop. When retracted there is zero difference over a standard baler in terms of crop handling.

When I upgraded balers I wanted to keep the bale slice but NH doesnt offer the bale slice in a 4x6 baler. Since making larger than 5' bales was a must for customers I went with the crop cutter. Knives can be added or subtracted to give you both long or short cut length. If baling delicate crops like dry alfalfa I can see how the rotor feeder would be hard on the crop.
