2023 Time To Rock and Roll

Looks like our first window of The year starting tomorrow. Of course, I’m at a horse show supporting my wonderful wife but cutting Monday should be fine. Temps only getting to high 70s but very low chance of rain to Saturday afternoon. Ya gotta take advantage of the opportunities you get and the normally available Memorial Day run looks like a washout

Another week or so and will be starting
Dropping some today and tomorrow. Got a rain day (maybe) middle of week so can't get too ahead of myself.
I am aiming to drop my first acres on Wednesday. Soaker rain all day today is just what needs to for the final few days to put it in a nice condition. Time to say goodbye to the wife until fall....
Our hay is short and still thin due to cold and very dry March and rain short April. We’ll dose this first piece with 70-75#n as urea as soon as the bales are off to try and catch up a little. You never really make up for a cold and dry spring.

I’m interested to see our yields. I feel there will fall short. Warm winter. Excessive heat beginning of April followed by cooler weather end April beginning May. Followed by a 20* freeze this week. Grass doesn’t know what to do. Had orchard grass heads popping on one bunch in the pasture 3rd week of April. Thank god it was just that bunch. They were starting to show in the fields last week.

Not expecting much, orchard grass just really started tillering out 2-3 weeks ago. Lots of heads. Only good thing is I am cutting the sweet vernal grass and removing it before it drops seed for next year. I will burn this piece with gly right after second cutting for early fall replanting.
Cutting today low 80's no rain filtered sun from the wild fires will add some drying time but no rain in the 7 day forecast see if it holds.
Dairy guys starting some are waiting till after weekend. Nephew called wanting to cut wondering on status of the big square baler, told him it would get hooked to the big tractor after we are done with the field cultivator after finishing beans the beginning of the week. Don't think there's a lot out there. 7 day forecast dry we could use a 1 inch soaking rain.
Our best window so far started today.. 5-6 days of sun and low 80s for highs maybe more depending how their forecast changes til then..there were some good chances of small rains this past week that made everyone pump the brakes but never materialized so laying hay on mainly dry ground now … few guys tried some about 2 weeks ago with highs in the low 60s and lows in low 40s, but I’ve heard mixed results on how that turned out..I didn’t want to wear a coat while baling so held off.. it’s wide open now so we’ll see what we can do

I've been helping a dairy friend of mine with first cut this past week; we're almost done. Shut down yesterday for rain overnight, but mowing again today and hopefully be done by Wednesday.
I didn’t want to wear a coat while baling
Wouldn't that be the ultimate in irony in this business....

What? You’ve never made freeze dried hay? 😆

More than once I have had to let the frost melt, then dry before tedding

I have too, but it was in the fall of the year, not first crop.
Lol.. no not this guy I’m cold blooded ..I’ll be the first to admit I’m use to making hay in out 95 degree 75% humidity.. when I get out of those conditions my playbook is pretty short.. we have 40% humidity now with sun and wind and I’ve never seen alfalfa dry like this.. trying not to get in a hurry and bale it but Im rather sure it’s ready.. just running ahead of my typical schedule so maybe I’ll try some things to do some learning

Most of mine was fall also , but a couple of may events as well
IH- baled 2 ac early today-moisture is still high-22-24 on the BHT-2, but 14.5 on the handheld. Poured the haygard to it. It’s drop dead gorgeous but ridiculously low yield. I usually run 100 bales to the ac average for first cutting. Last year only 80 , these two ac produced 135, argh!

That is disappointing.
Dropped 2 acres last night no rain forecast until Monday. Now a chance tonight. Oh well i guess we will see if all the work we did on the square baler paid off. The disc mower cut great with new blades on it
