The tilt steering won’t lock into place on a JD 6430.
Is this an easy fix or do I need to get a tractor mechanic?

Purty easy fix....a little sweat, a few tools, a hydraulic dampner and a few expletives will probably get you going :D

Can you please explain more in-depth for me please?
We’ve gone from a toy tractor to this JD - is there somewhere I can get a breakdown of what I need to do?

I’ll try....it’s been a while. First remove the beer holder from under the steering wheel :o you know the one, Deere runs A/c duct work to it to keep ‘em icy cold :D there are several screws that hold the bezel on behind that beer...er, cup holder. Remove all of them and remove the entire bezel. I don’t think you have to remove any of the plastic around the cluster but I can’t remember. That should expose what appears to be a small 8” long hydraulic cylinder and a latching mechanism for the steering wheel. The cylinder is generally what needs to be replaced. Without the pressure, the latching “pawl” will not latch correctly. Like I said, it’s been a few years....maybe TxJim can pull one of those handy dandy exploded views from Deere that will show you the various parts, it’s a very simple system, shouldn’t have any problems....make sure to have a 6 pack of your favorite beverages :) everything on that machine is metric but I suppose that doesn’t matter to you, that’s an American thing. Good luck!

Thanks to both of you. Our local JD dealer has the part. I’ll grab it tomorrow and hook in.

Many thanks
Regards Tom
